If you already have braces, you’ve probably heard that you’ll need regular adjustment appointments. These visits are sometimes called braces tightening appointments. That may sound a bit scary at first. What does it mean, and why do braces need to be tightened? These regular adjustment visits keep your whole treatment on track. We’ll explain why it’s so important to get your braces tightened and what to expect when you come in for a visit.
Soon after your braces are put on, you’ll feel that there’s a steady pressure on the teeth. That pressure is exactly what moves your teeth into better alignment. As your teeth shift, the tension from your brackets and wires slowly starts to fade.
Tightening restores that tension. Every time you visit your orthodontist for braces tightening, they check how much your teeth have moved and make adjustments based on that.
If you don’t get your braces tightened regularly, your teeth won’t move as planned, and your treatment may get delayed.
So these visits have dual benefits. Your treatment continues to move in the right direction, and your teeth also get evaluated. If there’s any issue, it can be corrected at the same visit.
Braces tightening appointments are typically every 4 to 6 weeks for traditional metal braces. Sometimes your orthodontist may schedule a visit sooner or later than usual. That depends on how well your treatment progress is going.
If a bracket pops out or a wire is poking into your cheek, you can ask for an early appointment. Waiting until your next visit may make the issue worse.
These visits are actually quite comfortable. You sit back and relax in the dental chair while your orthodontist makes the minor adjustments. Here’s what happens:
Your orthodontist will place small elastic ties across each bracket. They hold the main wire in place. At each of these visits, they change these ties with new ones. Removing them doesn’t hurt at all. It just takes a couple of minutes.
Your orthodontist takes a closer look at how much your teeth have moved since the last visit. They might look at your scans or photos to check the difference.
This is the main part. The main archwire is either adjusted or replaced with a new wire. You’ll feel the “tightening” effect as this happens.
Your teeth may hurt for a day or two after tightening. That’s normal. Opt for soft foods during this time that are easy to chew.
Here’s the fun part many kids and teens look forward to. You get to choose the color of the new ties! Choose whatever matches your style. Your orthodontist will then do a final check to make sure everything looks okay.
